A real customer story
A customer reached out to our support team after they couldn't login to their Instagram account. The customer had not logged into Instagram in a couple of days and did not change their password or login details. They discovered something was wrong after their friends asked them about strange posts showing up on their feed.
At that point, the user attempted to use the Instagram app and could not login anymore and contacted our support team.
What this user discovered is that the hacker had already changed their password and was posting crypto related phishing content to their feed and had no ability to stop them.
Investigating why
Our support team asked if the user received an email from Instagram and they had. Instagram sends an email to the registered address(at setup) whenever a login from a different location happens or a password is changed.
They were advised to respond to that email immediately to notify Instagram that the password change was invalid.
The exact reason of how the hacker received access to account is not known but it's VERY likely that the user clicked on a link which led them to a phishing site which compromised their login credentials.

It can be devastating if an account can't be recovered and the chances of getting it back depend on how Instagram can verify your identity. Here's what to do if this happens to you:
- Respond to the official email from Instagram advising you did not approve changing your password.
- Contact Instagram support who will guide you through steps to recover your account.
How to secure your Instagram account
- Change your password to a strong password using including a combination of numbers, symbols and upper/lowercase letters.
- Turn on 2 Factor Authentication - This adds an important layer of security to your account and makes it more difficult for hackers to gain control.
