Millions of children will be going back to school soon, here are some tips to keep them safe while online. Our kids have grown up in a digital world but that doesn't mean they're aware of the risks online so it's a good time to have some conversations with them about the potential risks of being online..
This point is especially important with so many of us working from home where our digital work and personal lives combine. Here are some tips to help:
1. Make sure automatic updates are on and everything is updated.
There are patches issued continuously to close security loopholes, so this is a simple way to reduce some of the risk associated with going online.
2. Know what apps and tools they are using for school.
When it comes to homework, our kids will likely be downloading apps and visiting a lot of different websites continuously to gather data and do research. Make yourself aware of which apps are being downloaded and which sites they will be visiting. Make sure you have an updated malware program which you can use to run on their systems and keep them clean from any malware.
2. Passwords
In this digital world, sharing is something everyone does frequently with pictures, videos etc. Make sure everyone knows that passwords should NEVER be shared with anyone.
3. Guest WiFi
Most routers have a function called guest WiFi and it allows guests/friends to access your home WiFi/internet separately from your normal WiFi. This function is perfect for your friends or your kid's friends to connect to whenever they visit your house and will avoid any infected devices from attacking or bringing down your network.
4. Understanding online footprint
Making online content such as videos can be a lot of fun, but make sure the risks and precautions are taken. Here's an article on using TikTok safely for families which has some great tips if you have teens using tikok. One of the most important things to consider with posting anything online is that once it's there, it can be shared and seen by others immediately and possibly forever. Things like NEVER sharing personal details about themselves is something they need to learn immediately.
5. Links and text messages
Anyone who sets up an email address can tell you it doesn't take very long before you start receiving spam messages and the same goes for mobile phones and SMS spam messages. Making kids aware that they should never click on messages they receive from unknown sources is a valuable lesson and one we all need to be reminded of occasionally.
