Phishing attacks happen when users are lured into clicking on a link and being redirected to a site that is designed to capture your login/password information or other data.
These attacks are especially dangerous because the hackers use fake sites which look like legitimate sites to deceive users.
What to do if you receive suspicious messages?
As a rule of thumb, don't click on any unfamiliar links sent via email or text and especially from email addresses or phone numbers you don't recognize.
- Check the link before you click on it but "Long tapping" it to ensure it's legitimate
- Use a separate search in a browser to check the URL or company
What to do if you clicked on a suspicious link
Most (but not all) phishing attacks will require you to enter data manually such as login or password information. If you only clicked on a link but stopped before entering anything, you maybe in no more danger, however follow these steps:
- Clear your browser's cache and history
- Perform a malware/virus scan on your device
- Reboot your device and router
