Having your bank or financial accounts compromised is one of the most frightening cyber attacks, especially since we use digital payments and transactions much more often than we have previously.
Here are some tips on what to do if you've been hacked.
Corrective steps if you've been compromised.
1. Contact your financial institutions immediately.
Having a financial account hacked can very stressful, so reach out to your bank or financial institution's fraud or customer service department immediately so they can stop any action on your accounts. Advice them what you've noticed and what could be strange/unknown transactions or the inability to log into your accounts. Ensure you contact all of them and that includes companies you have more than one type of account with. If you have a credit card and bank account with the same bank/institution for example, call the bank and their credit card operations as they can be managed separately.
2. Check the email associated with your account(s)
Most times, you will receive an email notifying you that someone has changed your login and to confirm. If this happened, contact your bank immediately.
3. Change passwords if possible
Think about the password on the breached financial account and if that password was used for any other accounts such as email or other apps, change the passwords immediately.
4. Credit bureaus
If you've noticed transactions were made without your knowledge, start the dispute process with the credit bureaus so any damage to your credit score is minimized. Here is a list of the large ones, but your country may have different ones and check with your financial institution for help to find them.
