BRATA is a piece of malware first affecting Brazilian users in 2019 but has spread to Europe, South America and Central America.
This malware can affect all android devices and is particularly bad because it steals user’s data and then performs a factory reset on the device to remove all traces afterward.
How it works:
BRATA hides itself in apps and uses keylogging to record banking and login credentials. It also removes the security features making it very hard to detect with virus or malware programs.
BRATA Symptoms:
-Slower than normal internet speed
-Spikes in data usage
-Battery draining quicker than normal.
How to avoid BRATA?
1. Never install apps from websites, only from the Google store.
2. Avoid installing apps from APKs or sideloading them to install.
3. During installing of apps, pay close attention to the permissions needed. The example below is asking for the user to accept “Erase all data” as a permission. Never allow permissions such as these.
If you are unsure with any app, check with the app producer directly.
